Drepung Monastery
Once renounced for its size and role as a center of Buddhist academic excellence, Drepung Monastery was built in the 15th century by another disciple of Tsongkhapa, the Buddhist reformer whose works led to the establishment of the Gelukpa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. One of Tibet’s three greatest Gelukpa Monasteries (along with Drepung and Ganden), Drepung’s Ganden Podang was the seat of the Dalai Lama lineage until the 5th Dalai Lama constructed the Potala Palace in the 17th century.
Ganden Monatery
Ganden Monastery is the first Gelukpa monastery and was stablished during the 15th century by Tsongkhapa, the Buddhist reformer whose work led to the establishment of the Gelukpa school. Although badly damaged during the latter half of the 20th centuryreconstruction efforts and the re-enshrinement of Tsongkhapa’s remains (formerly housed here) have led to partial restoration of the original complex.
Tsurphu Monastery
Tsurphu was founded by the 1st Karmapa, the head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, in the 12th century and is the historic seat of the Karmapa lineage lamas.
